Academic Support
We aim to holistically support and challenge our Fellows academically. We believe that problem-posing education is essential for our Fellows to develop their leadership and consciousness, as well as prepare them for life after high school.
During the school year, Fellows participate in daily study sessions where they receive support finishing homework, completing projects, studying for tests. Fellows also participate in independent reading and book clubs, where they read aligned novels that both challenge and widen their concept of freedom and identity. Our high school students also participate in College Cohort workshops and prepare for the ACT.
Additionally, Fellows participate in workshops such as which ask them to explore questions that are relevant to their worlds. Some workshops offered have been: restorative justice facilitation, leadership, black lives matter at school, hood feminism, and no more police.
During Freedom Summer, Fellows complete five weeks of academic and arts classes designed to prepare them for the next grade. These classes are taught by college students who receive extensive training and support from our staff.
Arts Programming
In addition to academics, Fellows participate in a number of arts clubs and workshops throughout the year. Many of the schools in the Delta have cut arts programming — the SCFP aims to offer students opportunities to explore different artistic mediums that they connect with and build skills for self-expression.
Printmaking
In our printmaking workshop, Fellows learn the fundamentals of screen printing — from mastery of the different equipment and processes, to a deep understanding of the design process, and finally through printing. In the past, Fellows have also studied how global struggles for justice have used printmaking and design as a tool in their movements. These historical examples have served as inspiration for many of our first prints.
